Kinesio Taping
What is
Kinesio taping is a technique based on the use of adhesive tapes, which support and stabilise muscles and joints, designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing without limiting the body’s movement or flexibility. Used in both the medical and sports recovery fields, kinesiology tape is designed to speed up the natural healing process of injured tissues by supporting muscles and joints. By stimulating various receptors in the somatosensory system, the kinesiology tape alleviates pain and facilitates lymphatic drainage. The lifting effect of the skin creates larger spaces between tissues, thus allowing a higher oxygen supply and a reduction of inflammation in the area. Very important for their effectiveness is the assessment of the patient by a specialist, who decides on the model, shape and technique of the application.
How to apply?
The kinesiological tapes used in this technique are 100% cotton, elastic and stick to the skin like leucoplast, moulding perfectly to the joints. The elasticity of the applied strip has a lifting effect on the epidermis by creating more space in the subcutaneous area, where different receptors, blood and lymphatic vessels are located. This effect of the strip on the skin improves subcutaneous blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. This stimulates the opening of lymph vessels and reduces pressure on pain receptors. The effect created between the band and the skin allows physiological movement, activating the body’s self-healing process. Kinesiology tapes are latex-free and easy to wear for days on end. From children to the elderly, they can help successfully treat orthopaedic, neuromuscular, neurological conditions, but especially sports injuries. This therapeutic method simultaneously provides the muscle support a patient needs and the rehabilitation of the affected function.
What conditions are treated?
The kinesio taping technique is recommended for many conditions:
orthopedic and post-traumatic: fractures, dislocations, sprains, flatfoot, vertebral static disorders,
rheumatic degenerative joint diseases: arthrosis of the hands and feet, coxarthrosis, gonarthrosis, spondylarthrosis,
degenerative rheumatic joint diseases: scapulohumeral periarthritis, coxo-femoral, epicondylitis, calcaneitis
peripheral neurological: neuralgia, neuritis and pain from various causes (cervical, thoracic, lumbar disc herniations)
central neurological sequelae after traumatic brain injury or stroke: hemiparesis, paraparesis, hemiplegia
Benefits
The benefits of using kinesiology tapes are obvious in reducing pain and reducing oedema.
It also contributes greatly to improving mobility and range of motion, as well as improving muscle contraction capacity and combating muscle spasms.
Muscle performance
Stimulates proprioceptive response through sensory endings in the muscles, joints and skin thus improving the interaction between the skin and subcutaneous structures, activating the subcutaneous nerve circuitry, resulting in a higher performance muscle response.
Pain relief
Inhibits nociceptors and blocks painful pathways in muscles, joints and skin. This reduces the intensity of the pain impulse transmission to the brain, normalises muscle tone and reduces pain and muscle spasm. The balance created within the neural circuitry in the muscles succeeds in reducing pain, decreasing oedema and improving muscle performance and function.
Support and stability
Provides joint realignment and stability without limiting movement and increases proprioceptive stimulation.
