Cryotherapy
What is
Cryotherapy is the local application of low or near-freezing temperatures and is used mainly to reduce inflammation and painful musculoskeletal symptoms and to slow down local metabolic processes. It is a painless method of treatment but involves a slight discomfort, because areas with little fat tissue (knee, ankle, elbow) are more sensitive to cold applications than areas richer in fat tissue such as thighs and buttocks.
How to apply?
The therapy involves exposing the affected area to low temperatures using the Crioultrasunet physiotherapy device, which combines two technologies: ultrasound and cold action. The control panel of the device allows the selection of characteristic parameters, the therapist having the possibility to set the frequency of the ultrasonic wave and the desired temperature. Exposure is done either by moving the applicator over the affected area or in a single fixed point for a short period of time, between 10 and 30 minutes. The duration of the treatment course is on average between 5 and 10 sessions and is determined individually for each patient depending on the pathology.
What conditions does it treat?
Cryotherapy is very effective in treating: inflammations, sprains, sprains, muscle strains, muscle contractures, muscle tears, contusions, back pain, rheumatic conditions, as well as in post-surgical treatment. Performance athletes use cold therapy to: reduce muscle damage, speed up the recovery process after intense physical activity, improve physical endurance, strengthen the immune system and increase exercise capacity.
Benefits
Cryotherapy is a valuable treatment that reduces post-traumatic oedema, inflammation, tissue temperature and helps to increase blood flow to the exposure site fourfold. Cryotherapy can lead to greater vasodilation compared to other treatment methods which has a direct impact on the quality of recovery. It is very effective in alleviating local pain, fighting spasms, calming inflammation, reducing edema and decreasing the inflammatory process. It stops bleeding, relaxes muscles, contributes to better sleep, stimulates the secretion of hormones and natural painkillers.
